UTILITY SUBSTATIONS
For decades electric utilities have relied on lead acid batteries for back up power for critical instruments at sub-stations during power outages. Batteries require constant up keep and are not cost effective for extended outages (several days). Disposal of the batteries are also problematic at the end of their life cycle and viewed as environmentally unfriendly. Microcell’s MGN series is designed to replace batteries with operation on clean hydrogen fuel with the following benefits:
- Lower cost over a 5 to 10 year life cycle of a battery system.
- Ability to remotely monitor the system for readiness, fuel availability and scheduled maintenance over the utility’s network.
- Longer duration of power during extended power outages. With hydrogen fuel delivered in commercial cylinders, back up power from a few days to a few weeks is easily attainable.
- Increased grid security.
- No disposal issues at the end of its life cycle.
Similar to data centers, manned substation facilities without natural gas amenities will also benefit from MGN’s combined heat and power delivery.
