DISASTER RECOVERY
Extended back up power is often required when power outage is caused by a natural disaster such as a hurricane or a major snow or ice storm. On the average, the recovery plans may take from a few days to a few weeks before the power is restored to the general public and commercial businesses. The southeast corridor of the United States is particularly prone to seasonal hurricanes but a natural gas supply typically does not exist in this geographic region. As a result, heat and hot water which also depend on electricity are also lost during a major power outage. Microcell’s MGN series, while operating on commercial hydrogen cylinders, delivers clean and quiet back up power and is also capable of providing the hot water needs of the facility. The combined heat and power feature of the MGN series increase the efficiency of the power system typically from about 30-40% (electrical) to as high as 70% (net electrical and heat).
Operation of a CHP fuel cell system in a back up mode reduces the green house gas and other harmful emissions as compared to diesel or gasoline fired generators and is significantly quieter.
